Located at the confluence of two rivers – the Tagus and the Zêzere – Constância has a characteristic appearance due to its sea of white houses, harmoniously perched on a hill.
The geographic location of the town determined its characteristics. In the 14th century, Constância was an important river port and a much sought-after commercial warehouse.
In the middle of the Tagus River, lies the enigmatic Castle of Almourol, which is one of the most allegorical monuments of the Christian Reconquista.
The Castelo de Almourol castle is located on a small island in the middle of the Tagus River. It is one of the most emblematic monuments found in Portugal, due to its importance and the surrounding landscape.
Together with the castles of Tomar, of Zêzere and of Cardiga, the castle formed the defensive line of the Tagus River.
After the Templar Order was dissolved and the territory no longer needed to be defended, the castle fell into obscurity until the 19th century. Then it was restored in the style of Romanticism, and you can see the result for yourself today.
